Prayers for Bobby

This is a movie that should be watched by anyone who is queer, or who knows people who are! It is based on the true story of Bobby Griffin who eventually killed himself when he was 20 by jumping from a bridge, all because of the religious intolerance his family showed when they found out he was gay.

After the point where Bobby suicides, the movie then goes through the journey his mother Mary has on a path of discovery of homosexuality from the perspective of a loving God.

It shows just how much damage hatred and intolerance can do, particularly when it comes from where you once felt so safe: the family home. The recent suicides of many other gay youths is yet another reason people should see this film and see the impact homophobia has on LGBT people.

Mary has since become one of the USAs biggest PFLAG (Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) supporter.

The movie stars Sigourney Weaver and Ryan Kelley.

  1. What is the proper response from a parent who believes homo-erotic behavior to be immoral, when a child indicates that s/he wants to engage in same? How could I, with any integrity, tell my child "If you want to have sex with someone of the same gender, that's fine with me, I'm sure that's how God made you so if you want a same-sex marriage, that's fine."

  2. Ruth's question @ proper response is one I think about often, too.

  3. We are all called to chastity according to our state in life. No one is exempt from St. Paul's exhortations against fornication and adultery. If heterosexuals are forbidden these things, why do homosexuals consider themselves exempt? If we live with Christ at the center of our lives it doesn't matter if we have the burden of same-sex attraction. All of us have burdens.

  4. You should all watch a movie (can see it instantly on Netflix) called Fish Out of Water. As for the correct response the words you choose to say are up to you but as for the correctness part, they should be said with love...
